Advantages and disadvantages of homebirth

One of the choices women have during pregnancy is how they will deliver. What I’m trying to say when I said how they deliver is where do they want to give birth-in the hospital or at their homes. Most women don’t realize they have that choice mainly because they don’t realize that homebirths are safe.But there are of course critics who are wary of this method.But if they just research and look for studies about this method then they will realize that there a lot of evidence that this method is safe.

The safety of a homebirth is definitely questioned.  From my observations from my practice as a San Diego midwife I have found it to be absolutely safe. From the 300 homebirths I have assisted in the dangers are just the same as if you were to deliver in a hospital.Having a baby in the hospital or at home doesn’t make any difference in minimizing those risks.On the ohter hand, the risks also would not increase because of this.

So what would be the main threat of undergoing a procedure like this?One danger that people worry about this method is when complications arise while having a baby.They think that people who assist in homebirths are not nurses.  Well as a homebirth midwife in San Diego we do know medical procedures.We have all the required medical equipment for all the common complications that appear when giving birth.It is but natural that any serious complications that would arise during birthing should be addressed by a doctor.  But that isn’t any different then in a hospital. 

Women who have low risk pregnancies are the only women recommended for homebirths.A good midwife would not recommend this method if some complications are found in a woman.  This is standard procedure for all San Diego licensed midwife.  Of course they will be limited in the medical procedures they can do.That is why they do not do homebirth if the pregnancy is high risk and they make sure that it would be delivered in the hospital.

For those who do not like this method it will be very hard to convince them to do so.  But for those women who see this as an alternative they should understand it is safe.
