My perspective is accounting is really unnecessarily complicated but after struggling with my accounting problems for sometime I found a very valuable shortcut that I have to share with you. Everyone who starts or runs their own business has ’more important’ things to do with their time than spend time on their bookkeeping. All organisations have to be committed to doing their accounting if they want to avoid problems.
When I initially started out my accountant advised or should I say insisted that I used a small business accounting software package developed by a corporation called Sage Software. Without even evaluating software I blindly went ahead and bought the lowest cost version I could find. On reflection I am lucky I didn’t burn too much cash on this as this software is arguably the most badly designed and most complex software I have ever had the misfortune to use. OK my first piece of advice is that whenever you see the words accounting software proceed carefully as it probably means the developer is assuming you know a substantial amount about accounting.
Like me I know this just isn’t the case for the majority of small business owners and this inspired me to put aside time that I couldn’t spare to find a solution to make my life easier. The second piece of wisdom I want to share with you is my discovery of a really useful and free system called salesorder.com.
This is definitively the simplest system I have ever used and what’s more it is net based and therefore I can use it from anywhere I choose to work. Better still and the third piece of advice I want to tell you is that the team who work at salesorder.com are not just very knowledgeable of their system but they know a great deal about the challenges of managing a small enterprise and have taught me the bookkeeping I need to know.
