Situated on 120 acres in Berks County, Pennsylvania, Zwicky Processing and Recycling(ZPR) has made a mission of recycling. ?Let?s be clear from the start. We don?t use the word ?waste? around here,? says company founder Dave Zwicky. ?There is no such thing as waste.? With that mindset, ZPR has built an operation that serves not only customers seeking to responsibly and economically dispose of waste, but also manufacturers looking to reduce high traditional fuel costs through the substitution of biomass fuel.
ZPR was quick to recognize the possibility of engineered fuels. ?Everything has a BTU value? notes Zwicky. ?With biomass materials, in effect our organic materials have as much value in recycled products as they did as first-use products.? The high cost of traditional fossil fuels coupled with increasing pressure to ?go green? has lead manufacturers to embrace alternative fuels. ZPR has established a process that allows them to efficiently process material while at the same time respond to the unique needs of each individual customer. Working closely with Continental Biomass Industries and Morbark, Chris Zwicky, Dave?s son and Operations Manager, helped developed a C&D recycling system that allows them to quickly produce large quantities of high-quality end product. Says Zwicky, ?You can give a guy a load of junk one time, but he?s not going to be there next year to pay your bills.?
ZPR?s biofuel is processed from the up to 1200 tons of scrap material, primarily C&D scrap, that they receive every day. Possessing a broad permit and a convenient location, ZPR is an attractive disposal alternative to landfills. Customers come not only from Pennsylvania but also from eastern New York and New Jersey, located less than four hours away. ZPR offers waste haulers an opportunity to bypass the high tipping fees of those states while also bolstering their sustainability record. With a 93% landfill diversion rate, ZPR assists businesses in attaining LEED certification and each customer is issued a certificate verifying ZPR?s designation as a beneficial reuse facility.
ZPR?s permit not only allows them to receive construction and demolition waste, but also creosote and pentachlorophenol-treated wood (like that used in utility poles and railway ties), and pre-consumer manufactured waste such as food processing waste, and plastic, rubber, elastomer and latex waste. From this wide variety of scrap material, ZPR has endless options in the formulation of fuel. Customers may choose from the large inventory of core, high BTU products or ZPR will work with them to create a fuel that meets their emission and burner requirements. ?Many fuels that we manufacture are custom-designed,? says Zwicky. ?We are able to create fuels for boiler and other fire-powered equipment that can meet current and future emission standards, simply by modifying the formula of what we add to the mix.?
Once the best combination has been determined, ZPR stores the fuel in a covered facility to maintain the highest possible fuel value. Over thirty years, it?s this attention to detail that has earned ZPR a loyal customer base. Making sure that a customer is satisfied is worth the investment in time. As Zwicky points out ?quick money isn?t good money.?
Through foresight and investment in quality equipment, ZPR is well placed to meet today?s recycling demands and to evolve with the recycling industry as a whole. ?We are only limited by the way we think about recycling as to how our products will help to meet the future needs of our nation,? says Zwicky. ?We have the potential to create all kinds of new ways to use recycled materials in the future.?
